SST
Space Shuttle
Transport *Also known as (STS)
STS
is (Shuttle
Transport System) which is not to be confused with the STS Plus Satellite Tracking
Software in
this site. The most recent Space Shuttle (re-modeled) is Atlantis ; NASA's
newest 'service shuttle'. It will be mainly the ISS's best friend
for some time.
The bright red
tank is storage for Hydrogen & Oxygen; (the main fuel). The 'smoke' from the Main Engines is really Steam!
The white 'trailer-smoke' seen during the first stage of liftoff;
is designed to help visual tracking, and it comes from the SRBs.
The two SRBs
(Solid Rocket Boosters)are some of the most powerful
'powdered-engines' to deliver the needed Gs to escape Earth's
gravity. They are allot like Giant Bottle Rockets! Once they
burn out, they fall back to Earth over the Atlantic, and then
are rescued. The French and Canadian Engineers have come up with the Idea to use the
red fuel tank as part of the Space
Station (ISS).
This has been a concern for NASA, because they have to consider
'carrying' it all the way up to the edge of space without loosing
it while up there. (Its not like they could tie it down somewhere
:)
Throughout most
Shuttle
Missions, Teachers and Educators work with
Students and Scientists from around the world. Previous missions
allowed classrooms and even the Internet a chance to see everything."up-close".
Students got involved with experiments from the ground with the
help of digital technology(HDTV) & (ground communications)
from partnerships & independant broadcasters and hosts; plus
the best of the ARRL
and private satellite connections. For more information on these Real Time adventures;
read about SAREX
and the Jason Project on NASA.
